Sodium sulfide is a chemical compound with the formula of Na2S, which is a white solid and soluble in water and can form an alkaline solution. Sodium sulfide and its hydrates, when exposed to air, can release H2S gas, which has a very pungent odor (similar to that of rotten eggs). Industrial sodium sulfide usually has a yellow and yellowish-brown color due to the presence of polysulfides.
